Q: A major retailer sold just under 90,000 of these on September 12, 2001.  13 times more from the year before.

A: American flags.

Walmart stores saw a giant spike in sales of the American flag following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.  On September 12, 2001, the company reportedly sold 88,000 flags in one day, which is thirteen times more than they sold on that day the year before, only 6,400.
