It was trending on twitter and everyone was talking about it. The Super Blood Moon. Many stayed up to see it, a few at work told me they slept through it. Experts said we should all stay up late because it wouldn’t happen again for YEARS.
Luckily, my kids had the day off of school the following morning. Our oldest son was at a bonfire in the neighborhood, so that left Greg, Hayden and I to sit out on the patio and watch the moon change colors before our very eyes. My 10-year-old has always found science fascinating, and me, not so much, but I wanted to share in the moment. I also wanted to crawl in bed since I get up so early for work, but this weighed more on the importance scale.
Hayden asked me facts about the moon, grabbed his camera to capture photos and commented that our dog, Cletus, seemed to also be watching the moon. Truth be told, Cletus was a bit spooked by the sound of crickets, and stood ready to attack at any moment’s notice. (Guess our dog doesn’t realize that he’s about 600 times larger, but that’s okay.)
As the moon turned more orange in color, Hayden sat next to his Dad and asked if we could sit outside for a few more minutes. It was late, but we agreed a little longer wouldn’t hurt. And then my little guy said:
‘I love this. Don’t you? Being out here together? I feel happy inside.’
Ahhhh, I suddenly loved the Super Blood Moon. That’s all I needed to hear. To know that taking time to do things together as a family make a difference, that it will be remembered years later as a moment we shared together. Kind of like my memories as a kid, when we wore our pj’s to Gene’s Root Beer for a coney dog and an ice cream cone.
Little things that later become the big things in life.
