Last week the Indianapolis Zoo shared the sad news that their youngest elephant died. Nyah was only six years old.

Unfortunately another elephant has passed away this week. This time it was 8-year-old African elephant, Kalina. According to Geek, the elephant passed away from an unpreventable virus that hits without warning and isn’t preventable.

Both elephants had high levels of endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV), a herpesvirus that can lead to fatal hemorrhagic disease. The virus does not spread to other animals or humans.

Zookeepers are monitoring the rest of the herd and say so far no other elephants are showing symptoms.
