One of the perks of working in radio is we often get to meet famous people. We have interviewed every country star you hear on the radio multiple times, so hanging with celebrities no longer causes me to become starstruck. They’re people, just like you and I.
But yesterday, I got to meet my childhood idol. Full disclosure, I freaked out a bit.
Darnell “Dr Dunk” Hillman of the ABA Indiana Pacers was someone who mesmerized me as a child.
We passed in the hallway of Bankers Life Fieldhouse last night and I was immediately stunned! For a moment I didn’t know what to say (that NEVER happens!), yet I eventually mustered up enough courage and mumbled something about him being my favorite Pacer of all time. Darnell smiled, though I talked so fast that I’m not sure he understood anything I said. Of course, I asked if I could get a selfie, and he obliged.
It’s not the best picture (my grand daughter Ruby was not impressed), but I got to check someone off my bucket list. YES! Now if I could just meet Regis Philbin! (My other idol.)
