As expected, it was a pretty big night for Luke Combs at the 53rd Annual CMA Awards. The 29-year-old took home both Song of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.
But, when he went up to accept the latter award, the audience was a lot louder. And some fans thought the noise sounded a lot like booing (which I can absolutely understand).
Check it out in his acceptance speech below. Is starts about 40 seconds in.
The #CMAawards winner for Male Vocalist of the Year is @lukecombs!
He went from singing on @GMA early this morning to winning twice tonight! https://t.co/hA9ahoa4Mp pic.twitter.com/Fdm12jSPPE

A lot of people took to Twitter with their concerns:
Please lord tell me the audience was yelling LUUUUUKE and not booing for Luke Combs 😭 #CMAawards

Someone please confirm that the crowd was yelling “Luuuuuke” instead of booing him……@lukecombs #CMAawards

Are people booing @lukecombs?
Rather you agree with this choice or not, that’s not country music to boo. Did I miss something?#CMAawards

I thought it was booing for like a second, then remembered it was Luke freaking Combs so I figured they were probably saying “Luuuuuuuuuuuuke.” Bruce Springsteen fans do something similar when he takes the stage and it sounds a lot like booing.
The Tennessean and Kelleigh Bannen, who were at the actual show, chimed in to say that it was indeed encouragement rather than disappointment.
FYI they were yelling LUKE. 🖤

Those are not boos at the #CMAawards. That’s @lukecombs’ fans screaming out his name as he takes home Male Vocalist of the Year. LUUUUUUKKKEEEE
